Welcome to CARE @ Home

Physical activity can reduce cancer recurrence by 35% and reduce risk of cancer related death by
50%. However, studies show that less than 30% of people with cancer are active.

Why?

There is an abundance of research showing the benefits of physical activity and exercise among all stages of cancer- before, during and after treatment. So why are so little people with cancer active?

Of course, there are so many side-effects of cancer surgery and treatment that make it difficult to get moving, including but not limited to:

  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced movement
  • Loss of strength
  • Poor sleep
  • Reduced energy
  • Low Mood- depression and anxiety
  • Poor body confidence
  • Other complications such as Lymphedema

Research shows that the majority of people living with and beyond cancer will experience
compromised physical and cognitive function due to cancer treatments and side-effects but only 2-9 % of individuals are being referred to rehabilitation services for cancer treatment-related impairment and disability.

That less than 1 in 10 people being referred.

Despite the huge volume of high-quality research to support cancer rehabilitation, many people are
missing out due to limited awareness, availability and access to services.

So this is why we created CARE@home.

CARE @home is an evidence-based 3 phase rehabilitation programme designed to help you during and after treatment. The 3 phases help address the many side-effects of surgery and treatment focusing on range of movement and functionality, reducing pain, increasing energy levels and stamina and with an overall aim to improve overall quality of life. Furthermore, this online programme helps to address some of the barriers to cancer rehabilitation including accessibility and affordability. You can start moving from the comfort of their own home at a time that is suitable and convenient for you!

This course has been designed by Chartered Physiotherapist and Pilates Instructor Dr Catherine Browne. Through personal and clinical experience, Catherine has seen first-hand the physical and emotional impact cancer and its side-effects can have on the lives of people affected and the people close to them. Her PhD research and background as a Women’s Health Physiotherapist deepened her interest in both Pilates and cancer rehab. Catherine is a PINC and STEEL Certified Cancer Rehabilitation therapist, and has extensive training in movement, pilates and rehabilitation.
